A short while ago I learned of a shooting, which occurred in Aurora, Colorado at 12:30 this morning resulting in the death of 12 individuals and the injury of more than 70 others. At the premier of Batman: The Dark Knight Rises a young man entered through the back door; he is described as wearing black body armor, complete with a gas mask, and armed with multiple weapons including and assault rifle. Upon his entrance he released gas bombs into the theater, after they erupted He shot at individuals, who at times were only inches away from the barrel of his gun. Moviegoers young and old raced around as complete and utter pandemonium erupted. Families were torn apart and yet again the familiar images of mourning, prayer, and helplessness.
I see no sense in opening fire in a place of entertainment, a place in which people should feel at ease. I hope that proper and just punishment is issued to the 24-year-old and that he truly understands the gravity of his actions. I will keep him unnamed, and will instead turn my focus to the victims of this event.
Jessica (Ghawi) Redfield.
